Over at OEDb (Online Education Database) they have an article about the 50 Books that changed the world. Among them are:

1984 by George Orwell
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by JK Rowling
The Bible
Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank

In the article they have the top 50 split into categories:

Politics & Government
Literature
Society
Science, Math, and Geography
Religion

1984 was an absolute classic.

I haven't read 1984, but the rest... wow, they could all be put under any of those categories!
